WARDROBE & STYLING

Choose What Makes You Feel Fabulous

  • Coordinate, Don’t Match: Choose a color palette with 2-3 complementary colors rather than identical outfits. Think about a coordinated and cohesive look, but not uniform. Each family member should have their own style that complements others in the family.

  • Consider the Setting: Coordinate your outfits and the location. Soft, neutral tones work great for outdoor nature settings, while bolder colors can stand out in urban environments.

  • Layering is Key: Layers add depth and texture to photos. Consider cardigans, scarves, or jackets to give your outfits more dimension.

  • Avoid Loud Patterns: Subtle patterns are fine, but avoid large logos, busy prints, or anything distracting that may take attention away from the family. Small patterns can be used to break-up too many solids and pull colors together. A small check on a shirt or a small print on a dress, skirt or blouse can add variety and cohesiveness.

  • What’s at Home: If you plan to display your photos on a wall in your home, take into consideration the decor and color palette at home while selecting the wardrobe for your family photos.

  • Timeless Over Trendy: Opt for classic styles that won’t feel outdated in a few years. Timeless outfits ensure your photos stay beautiful for generations.

  • Comfort is Important: Make sure everyone feels comfortable in their clothes. Uncomfortable clothing will show in the photos, so choose outfits that fit well and allow everyone to move easily.

  • Play with Textures: Mixing textures like denim, cotton, or knits can add richness to your portraits and create a more visually interesting image.

  • Dress for the Season: Consider the weather and dress accordingly. For colder months, think cozy sweaters and boots; for warmer weather, lighter fabrics like linen or cotton work well.

  • Accessorize Lightly: Simple accessories can enhance a look, but avoid anything too bold that might overpower the image. Think small jewelry, hats, or subtle hair accessories.

  • Footwear Matters: Don’t forget about shoes! Choose footwear that complements your outfits and the setting—avoid overly casual flip-flops or bright sneakers unless they fit the vibe.

SELF-CARE TIPS

Plan Ahead

Hair and Makeup: If needed, schedule appointments for cut and/or color a week or so before your photoshoot. If you’re doing your own hair and makeup yourself; consider going with your everyday look so you feel like yourself, and practice beforehand to achieve the look you want. If you’ve opted for professional hair and makeup we’ll discuss the details with the artist prior to your shoot.

Skin: A few days before the shoot, exfoliate and moisturize your skin to give it a healthy glow. Avoid trying new skincare products right before the session to prevent any unexpected reactions.

Nails: Neat, well-groomed nails are important. Whether you go for a natural look or a bold color, make sure they’re camera-ready.

Nutrition: Try to steer clear of alcohol and sugar in the days leading up to your photoshoot to minimize inflammation. Instead, load up on fresh veggies for that healthy glow.

Hydrate: Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your shoot. Hydrated skin looks healthier and more vibrant.

Rest: A good night’s sleep before your session is crucial. Rested eyes and a fresh complexion will make you feel and look your best.

MINDSET

Embrace the Experience

Nerves are Normal: It's completely normal to feel a bit nervous before a family photoshoot—it’s quite a bit of preparation! Remember, this will be a fun experience, but it might not feel fun while you’re loading everyone into the car and checking off all the details. Trust the process, and know that I’ll be there to guide you and your family every step of the way. I’ll keep the tone light and I also be efficient.

Follow My Lead: I will ‘read the room’ and make adjustments to the photographic process depending on how different family members are feeling. I may start working with the whole family if everyone is on board or I may photograph an individual that is feeling more confident and give others some space and time to warm-up.

Be Prepared to Take a Break: It can be uncomfortable to have an audience when being photographed. When I’m working with small groups or individuals, I may ask others to take a little walk and take the pressure off the family members with the camera focused on them.

Prepare to Pivot: We plan for several contingencies and this includes the potential for unexpected weather or events. I’ve been doing this for 18 years and I always have alternative ideas to pull from to meet the occasion. This is especially true when we’re working outdoors. The experience is part of the fun.

Let’s Have Fun: Having a fun and positive family photoshoot, results in photos that your family will love and cherish and a memory that will be connected to that experience. Don’t worry if the kids aren’t cooperating, it’s a new and exciting experience and they are doing their best to step up to the occasion. If you’re having fun, the rest of the family will follow. Have a great time and we will make a found memory along with gorgeous family portraits.
